The AJ Bell British Junior Championships, the first major junior event of the year, are under way in Birmingham with a busy opening day featuring in excess of 200 matches at two venues.
Action began at 11.00, starting with Boys U13 matches on all ten courts at Edgbaston Priory, while matches at the University of Birmingham began with the Boys U19 first round.
After a number of withdrawals over the Christmas and New Year period, entries settled at around 350 across the ten draws, with all competitors required to submit a negative lateral flow test before being allowed to play (the same applies on day three).
With many of the top seeds receiving first round byes action centred on reducing most of draws to the last sixteen stage – the B19 is already down to the quarters, but there are R32 matches still to play in the older Girls’ events.
All the top seeds are still in contention, and Day Two will see the two rounds in most draws as the semi-finalists are decided.
